Non-Toxic, Beautiful Make Up

A 35 year old woman smiling at the camera

When I started on my journey of discovering about the toxic chemicals laden in cleaning products, beauty products, baby products and more I realised that make-up was one thing that I would need to change.

Most of us women wear make-up every day and the average woman puts around 168 differernt chemicals on to her skin every day, from make up to hair products to skincare... the list goes on. That's a lot of chemicals and these chemicals disrupt female hormones and can contribute to more serious illnesses over time.

Not only that but my children touch my face throughout the day, play with my make-up and have some transferred on to them by all the cuddles and kisses... I knew that if it was affecting them to, then it was important for me to swap over to non-toxic beauty products.

I am not a make-up girl who buys copious products to try different looks and has all the skills to contour etc. I admire the girls that can do all of that, but I am a mum of 3 who has minimal time to apply make-up daily. I do like wearing make-up to create a natural look though, that enhances my features and gives me confidence but I knew that breaking the habit of buying from the local make-up counters, or online designer brands would need to stop.

An Inika Mascara

Several years ago I began to buy some non-toxic beauty products from my local health food shop. Some of it was good, some was not so great and didn't perform how I would have liked it to. But I was sticking to my plan of switching over to non-toxic make up. Over time a few new brands started appearing, who were clean, green, non-toxic and performed well.

One brand in particular that I still buy from is Inika, I am a fan of their mascara particularly! But there were still a couple of items that I just found were not quite right for my skin.

So recently I did some research into some of these brands, watched youtube videos of women applying the make up and decided to invest in buying some new products in the hope that they would suit me, feel good on my skin and colour match better.

A collection of Ilia Beauty products

This new brand that I can totally vouch for is Ilia Beauty. I did a little haul and bought the stick foundation, concealer, highlighter, finishing powder and multi-stick (a stick for using on cheeks and lips). It can be daunting buying make-up online as you don't know which shade will actually suit your skin tone, but Ilia provide a free service where you can send a no-make up selfie to them and they will recommend the products and shades for you. I was so surprised when my make-up arrived and it totally matched! They really exceeded my expectations.

FOUNDATION STICK - I was tentative about this as it is a dry stick and not a liquid foundation, which I am used to, but it is glorious, It slides on to the skin beautifully and has great coverage without feeling cakey. (Also, this one doesn't have SPF included, which is what I wanted!)

CONCEALER - Colour matched the foundation perfectly and has great coverage for redness, under eyes and blemishes.

HIGHLIGHTER - A lovely subtle highlighter that compliments the skin.

FINISHING POWDER - A light powder that sets on top of the make up and removes any shine, without leaving the skin dry.

MULTI STICK - A stick for cheeks and lips. I love that these two areas are covered by one stick and how they match each other. Very subtle. yet pretty.

This make-up is also incredibly easy to apply. I am looking forward to buying more products from them when my other ones run out!

Thankfully now we are in a time where these kind of natural products are available and perform exceptionally well.

And as I have two girls, I am excited for them to be able to use clean make-up when they are teenagers and start on their make-up journey in the cleanest, non-toxic way possible, whilst still having fun!
